FAQ: Why is Sandlot Closing?

After five incredible seasons as “Baltimore’s Beach,” the sun will set on Sandlot for the final time this fall. This is a difficult but necessary step as the next major phase of development gets ready to kick off at Harbor Point. The team at Beatty Development Group will explore options for keeping the spirit of Sandlot alive next season and beyond, even as Harbor Point undergoes a significant amount of construction and change over the next few years.

A significant portion of the space that Sandlot occupies today will become Point Park, a 4.5-acre open green space. Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2021.

Why is Sandlot closing?
Sandlot was always envisioned as a temporary 3-to-5-year installation to activate an empty portion of Harbor Point until the development of Point Park, a 4.5-acre open green space.

What will go in Sandlot’s place?
A significant portion of the space that Sandlot occupies today will become Point Park. Point Park will be developed in tandem with the future global headquarters of T. Rowe Price, located on what is currently the large surface parking lot between Sandlot and Wills Wharf.

Why can’t Sandlot stay in the final design of Point Park?
As part of Beatty Development Group’s agreement with Baltimore City, the firm has pledged to create 9.5 acres of publicly accessible open green space at Harbor Point. Keeping Sandlot, a privately-owned entity, at its current size and location would make delivering on that pledge impossible.

When will Sandlot be closing?
Sandlot will close for regular activities (food and drink service, recurring events, rentable space) on September 6, 2021. The sand volleyball courts will remain open for the duration of the Volo City season, expected to conclude in mid-October.

When will the construction of Point Park and the T. Rowe Price headquarters begin?
Initial construction activities are anticipated to begin in Fall 2021. Construction is scheduled for completion by year-end 2024.

Will the promenade stay open during the construction?
There will be periods of time where closing the promenade is necessary, but the intent is to minimize the impact. Construction updates will be posted on the Harbor Point website at: harborpoint.com/construction.
